If you’ve never been to the track before (or even if you have), there are a few things to keep in mind before you descend onto the oval of glory….
-1)Faster traffic is on the inside lanes. Slower traffic is on the outer lanes. Just like when driving, faster traffic is on the left (inside) & slower traffic is on the right (outside). Speedy folks (5:00/mile and/or faster) who use the track often tend to come through VERY FAST on the inside lane (Lane 1). I ‘generally’ recommend running in lanes 2-5 unless you’re cranking out 5:00/mile or faster
-2)If someone behind you yells ‘track’, ‘on your left’, and/or some permutation thereof, that means you should (carefully) slide over to the right and let said runner pass on the left. Just like when you’re on the road, you want to check to make sure it’s ‘safe’ to change lanes before you actually change lanes!
-3)Be VERY CAREFUL getting onto the track. We don’t have exclusive access to the track (I don’t have that kind of pull with the city ). So, we’re ‘sharing’ it with a bunch of other people looking to address their need for speed. That means it ‘can’ get a bit busy out there with lots of runners flying through! Please keep your wits about you and check to make sure it’s ‘safe’ to step onto the track to start your interval. Be a ‘defensive’ runner.
-4)Be careful when you ‘finish’ your intervals! It’s a very natural reaction to just want to come to a DEAD halt as soon as you finish your interval. You’ve been working HARD! But, be careful when you ‘cross’ the finish line. Carefully, veer off to the outer lanes (safely) to slow down and catch your breath. If you’re in the inner lanes, I’d say carefully/safely veer off to the left onto the grass field connected to the track.
The high level message is ‘be a defensive runner’. Pay attention to what you’re doing, when you’re doing it, & how you’re doing it, and you’ll be fine.
-5)UNPLUG! I’d highly recommend NOT wearing headphones during our speed session. Whether it’s music or a podcast, running on the track with your earbuds in makes it tough for you to be aware of everything that’s going on around you. Unplugging makes you a bit more engaged.
-6)Wear a watch/device/app/etc that has a ‘stopwatch’ function. The workout we’re tackling is very ‘time’ oriented. But, you don’t need anything complicated to tackle it. Truly, the most basic stopwatch function is all that is required. Whether it’s a watch, an app, a device, etc, as long as it has some kind of ‘stopwatch’ function, you’re good to go!
-7)Travel LIGHTLY if at all possible. While I ‘can’ accommodate ‘some’ small personal items, if EVERYONE on the roster (70+) shows up tomorrow night with a GIANT backpack, it would be a bit challenging to manage So…..if at all possible, travel LIGHTLY tomorrow for speedwork!
