We’re heading NORTH on Saturday. If you’re going short, you’re crossing the bridge, getting a little ‘taste’ of the Marin Headlands, before heading back to the Warming Hut.
If you’re going LONG, you’re tackling an EPIC course that includes summiting not one, but TWO amazing hills that provide some of the best views in the entire Bay Area.
Here’s a link to the course map for this Headlands flavored adventure run….
Adventure Run 4.5ish/8.8ish miles
Here’s the lowdown on navigating this ‘magical’ adventure run…
- Run just past Long Avenue and take a LEFT and head up the stairs (.07 miles)
- Follow the markings and trail to the Presidio Promenade (.26 miles) and follow the Presidio Promenade to Battery East Road (.4 miles). Follow Battery East Road to the pedestrian side of the bridge (.53 miles)
- Continue towards the North end of the bridge. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! THERE ARE TYPICALLY A REASONABLE NUMBER OF TOURISTS WHO AREN’T PAYING ATTENTION. BE SMART AND BE POLITE IF YOU NEED TO GET AROUND SOMEONE.
- Continue to the end of the bridge to the Visitor Center. This is 2.28 MILES. Follow the chalk markings underneath the bridge to the parking lot on the WEST side of the bridge. Grab some aid from me and turn around and head back the way you came for 4.56 miles!
- Those going long will connect with Coastal Trail and zig zag up Coastal Trail across Conzelman Road and continue on SCA Trail (2.6 miles). There are some QUALITY hills on this run, so there’s no shame in walking a few of them to catch your breath!
- At the t-intersection of SCA @ Slacker Trail, you’ll turn LEFT (3.49 miles).
- Continue to the bottom of Slacker Hill Trail (3.8 miles). Head up Slacker Hill and take in the incredible view at the crest! Take a few deep breaths and descend to continue with our adventure.
- At the bottom of Slacker Hill, turn RIGHT (4.28 miles) and head back to the t-intersection (4.58 miles). Continue running past the t-intersection.
- At mile 4.85 (approx), veer RIGHT and head to the top of Engagement Hill (4.96 miles). Take in the awe inspiring view before turning around and heading back to the t-intersection (5.35 miles).
- Turn LEFT and head downhill at the t-intersection and head back to the parking lot (6.45 miles). Grab some aid and follow the paved path under the bridge and connect to the pedestrian path. Follow the pedestrian path back across the bridge and back to the Warming Hut the way you came for a total of 8.8 miles.
- *NOTE-While the long route is a ‘mere’ 8.8 miles, it’s no mere 8.8 miler! This route is beautiful, but includes many hills, technical terrain, and 1,500+ feet of ascent/descent. With this in mind, I’d recommend bringing water/fluids, GU Energy products (we can provide!), and focusing on ‘level of effort’ while tackling any hills. Again, there’s no shame in taking a walk break or two!
