How did you become interested in the sport of running?
Brian: As San Francisco locked down in 2020, I looked to running as a legitimate way to leave our apartment for a few hours a week and ‘lose’ myself in my headphones. It became a kind of therapy for me and a way to deal with external pressures while also improving my health and weight issues dramatically. Since then, I’ve been continually trying to improve using Run Club to explore parts of the city that wouldn’t otherwise have had the pleasure to see.
Christy: I always liked walking places and thought that running would be a great way to see more in a shorter amount of time. I also love how versatile it is: alone or with a group, 20 minutes of five hours, on a track or through the mountains- there are so many options!
What is your favorite race distance and run type and why?
Brian: There’s times and places for all distances, but I like a road half marathon or a 10k trail. I’m currently training for the SF Marathon which will be my first full marathon.
Christy: 10k Road- just long enough that pacing is easier, but not too long AND 50k Trail- the best “adventure” distance plenty of time to eat, but also short enough that you can run it fast.
What makes you excited to coach/captain for Run Club?
Brian: The chance to share my running experiences and journey with others in a friendly environment. The metaphorical distance I’ve come in a short space means that it really can be a sport of hobby for most anyone. (Prior to 2020, I maybe ran three times a year so I still consider myself as someone who’s fairly new.)
Christy: I believe that running is one of the best ways to build community, and I’ve met some of my best friends through running. I’m excited to bring my passion for the sport to other people, and hopefully assist in helping Run Club members achieve their goals and make new friends!
Please stop and say hi the next time you come to a workout and give Christy and Brian a big Run Club welcome!
