Meet Run Club’s new Coach, Melissa Watkins!
How did you become interested in the sport of running?
My interest in running evolved when I was in college. I ran for general fitness until a friend of mine encouraged me to sign up for a half marathon. In 2009, I ran my first half (the San Jose Rock n Roll). I was so captivated by the energy of the crowd and the sense of accomplishment from crossing a finish line. That race ignited my passion for running, and it has been a huge part of my life ever since.
What is your favorite race distance and run type (road/trail) and why?
My favorite distance is the half marathon. The half marathon is the right balance of challenging and manageable. My favorite type is usually road, but I’m becoming more attracted to trail runs. I love being immersed in the beautiful scenery that trail running has to offer, but with (flatter) road running, I can run much faster!
What makes you excited to coach/captain for Run Club?
The Run Club community is an extremely positive, social, and supportive group of runners, so when I was given the opportunity to join, it was an immediate YES! I’m excited to be a part of Run Club and support members with their individual goals and personal journeys with running, whether they’re completely new to running or targeting more advanced distances.
What do you do when you’re not coaching for Run Club?
I’m a Marketing and Fundraising Manager for a nonprofit
Besides running, do you have any other hobbies?
I enjoy hiking, backpacking, and camping.
Welcome to Run Club Melissa! We’re lucky to have you!!
